Martha Jane (Alexander) Purcell

Martha Jane Purcell, 71, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Martha was born on September 5, 1951 in La Porte, IN, to Raymond Edward and Phyllis Marine (Nelson) Alexander.

On June 26, 1973 in Kingsbury, IN, she married Stephen Mark Purcell, who survives.  Also surviving are her daughter, Jennifer (Andrew) Thompson of La Porte; 2 grandsons, Collin and Preston Thompson of La Porte; siblings, Patricia Zernick of La Porte, Thomas (Stephanie) Alexander of North Judson, Carol Leyva of KY, Judith (Randy) Hensell of La Porte, Debra (Dick) Stout of Kingsford Heights, Lori  Hawk of La Porte,
Duane Alexander of Warsaw, and Denise (Bob) Alexander of Hamlet; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sandra Chapman; brother, Raymond Alexander, II; 3 brothers-in-law, John Zernick, Alberto Leyva, and Eddie Lee Hawk; sister-in-law, Patricia Kuta; and several nieces and nephews.

Martha graduated from La Porte High School.  She was a wonderful wife and homemaker for 49 years.

Martha volunteered at The Salvation Army of La Porte and loved helping those in need.  She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed playing cards and visiting the casino.  Martha was an avid BINGO player.  Most importantly, Martha loved spending time with her family, especially her grandsons, Collin and Preston, who had her whole heart.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at The Salvation Army of Michigan City with Major Alan Wurtz officiating.  Burial will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the church.
